Augsburg Expedition to Cho Oyu (Tibet, 8201 m)

    April 18 - May 28, 1999

Now you can read our expedition diary here. Before, you can have a look at our original schedule, and you can read how our (Hartmut's and Claudia's) 1997 Cho Oyu attempt evolved.

General

The "Augsburg Cho Oyu Expedition 1999" consists of six members (in alphabetical order):
  • Claudia Bäumler
  • Michael Beuter
  • Hartmut Bielefeldt
  • Petra Kluger
  • Sorin Nistor
  • Christian Rottenegger
From 18 April to May 28, 1999, we attempted the world's sixth highest mountain Cho Oyu, taking benefit of the organisation support (until basecamp) of a German mountain travel company. Three out of us six have reached the summit.

Sponsors

  • We wish to thank the Alpenverein sections Augsburg, and Überlingen/Bodensee for financial support for their members, respectively.
  • LEKI provided us with ski poles and gloves.
  • Some participants received support from Franziskaner Hefeweißbier.
  • Lowa gave equipment to some participants.
  • Gore and Mammut gave jackets to some participants.
  • Deuter participated in some participants' equipment.
  • Odlo participated in the clothes of some participants.
  • Elho gave equipment to some participants.
  • Rohner gave clothes to come participants.
  • From Alpina some participants received sunglasses.
  • Überkinger supported some of the participants.

Day 41, 28.05. Flight back to Frankfurt
This schedule basically follows the "proven scheme". Unlike other expeditions arriving already in late March and staying more that 8 weeks there, we try a successful climb within six weeks. That was sufficient for many other groups before, and not everybody has an infinite amount of vacation days. For many employers (even in Germany ;-) it appears hard to let a person take his complete year's vacation (or maybe more) in one block of six weeks, and we'd like to thank the corresponding employers herewith.
Apart from that, a very long stay at base camp might be not too productive since the height of 5700 m exceeds the maximal height of any permanent village by 500 meters, and that certainly has a reason. There, one cannot expect a real recovery from the work done at the mountain - so the main focus should be a quick and effective progress on the mountain.
